Description
Item Code AC1134, Price £200 (GBP)
A rare Victorian gunsmiths tool used to gauge the bore of a shotgun. Manufactured by Samuel Allport of Birmingham (whose name we see more commonly on percussion cap dispensers). The rod is marked in inches along its length. It would be inserted into the barrel of a shotgun to the required length and when the knob is rotated the arms at the other end of the rod move and the internal bore size can be read on the measurements engraved at the handle. Very good condition. An interesting example of a tool used in 19th century gunmaking and gunsmithing.

A superb high quality Western holster made about 1920 by John Thomas Pickett in Manila, Philipines. They did actually have ranches, cowboys and even rodeos in the Philipines.
Measures 11" overall. Very attractive decoration on the front of the holster and would have been an expensive item in it's day.
John Thomas Pickett was born on 23rd February 1868 near Lowville, Ontario, Canada. He moved with his family in late 1870 to Vermillion, Clay County, South Dakota. There he learned the harness making trade from his brother-in-law, David Aldona Hopkins. That was a skill he carried with him. At the start of the "Spanish War," he enlisted as a saddler and was promoted to Corporal in Company D of the 1st South Dakota Infantry. He served in the Philippines and subsequently in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. He then returned to the Philippines and began a company associated with harness making, leather goods, rope and mining. He died in 1939. Very good condition.

A set of four original invoices and a letter from Boss & Co. the famed London Gunmakers dating from 1867 to 1885 all to Captain the Honorable Ernest Cochrane RN. In excellent condition and preserved in new frames. A great set of 19th Century gunmaking ephemera from one of the best gunmakers of the time. Captain Cochrane was obviously slow to pay his bills.
Cochrane (1834 - 1911) a naval officer was the son of the 10th Earl of Dundonald. He served on board the ships Victory, Hibernian, Wellesley and Trafalgar. In 1854 he participated in the capture of Bomarsund during the Crimean war. 1856 made lieutenant commander HMS Chub. 1864 he married the daughter of the Governor of Sierra Leone. But she died one month later. 1866 he married the daughter of Dr Richard Doherty. Richard was a lecturer teaching midwifery in Queens university Galway. Richard converted late in his life to Catholicism. 1868- 1870 he was the commander of HMS Peterel off the Cape of Good Hope and West Africa. 1873 he retired as Captain. The Redcastle estate was left to him by Richard on the condition that his children be brought up Catholic. 1879. He became the High sheriff of County Donegal.

A "Sandringham" pattern game counter. These counters were used at the turn of the 19th/20th Century on big shoots where the bag was large. This counter will count up to 999 and could be used as a shot counter (to record the total number of shots fired) or a game counter recording game killed. Identical counters (albeit marked with a Royal cipher) are shown in David Bakers excellent book “The Royal Gunroom at Sandringham” confirming their use on the large Royal estates. Excellent condition.

A very unusual ramrod for a flintlock pistol. It measures 9 7/8" overall. On one end is a worm for withdrawing a charge and on the other end there is a brass rammer fitiing which unscrews to reverse and screw on again to now form a powder measure. I guess the pistol would be held upside down so the measure of powder could be delivered to the bottom of the barrel and then the pistol could be turned muzzle up to receive the ball. Very good condition.

A very good example of a Victorian bird scarer used by gamekeepers and beaters on the big estates. This one is very well made and was probably made by the Estate carpenter. It has the owners name engraved on a brass plate - first time I've seen that. Presumably to avoid it being purloined by someone else on Shoot Day. Very good condition and a lovely colour. It still works and sounds like a machine gun.

A very unusual cannon rammer 41 1/2" long with wooden shaft and very fancy worked iron fittings and a worm under a screw off cover. I haven't seen one like this before but I think it is possibly Turkish or Far Eastern and for ramming a small bore cannon or wall gun. The style looks to me a little like a Latanka and the length and bore size would match. Very well made and decorative. Looks to have quite a bit of age so could be early 19th Century or even late 18th Century. Very good condition.

There has been a recent drop in the UK market for game counters, as a result of Indian manufactured fakes appearing, and so we were able to buy this counter from a collector for a very keen price. A very rare accessory for the Martini Henry .577/450 rifle which is described in a Bonehill gun catalogue dating from the 1880's as a barrel cooler. The photo of the catalogue shows how it is used. The mouthpiece is bone and the metal part is nickel plated. The flexible rubber tube has been replaced with a contempory cloth covered rubber tube of correct pattern but the cloth woven covering is fraying at the ends. A very rare accessory for the keen Martini rifle collector or shooter.

A very rare pair of ivory Life Members passes for the National Rifle Association issued to a man and wife Mr. and Mrs. A. Rosling dated 1905 and 1911. Interestingly Mrs. Rosling's pass is the earlier of the two. They are made from ivory and hand engraved with the NRA badge and the Life Members name. They are also signed in ink by the Secretary of the NRA at the time. I would think that female Life Members passes dated from the early 1900's are relatively scarce and even rarer when sold with the husbands pass. Excellent condition and a rare opportunity to obtain a family group of NRA passes.
