A superb high quality Western holster made about 1920 by John Thomas Pickett in Manila, Philipines. They did actually have ranches, cowboys and even rodeos in the Philipines. Measures 11" overall. Very attractive decoration on the front of the holster and would have been an expensive item in it's day. John Thomas Pickett was born on 23rd February 1868 near Lowville, Ontario, Canada. He moved with his family in late 1870 to Vermillion, Clay County, South Dakota. There he learned the harness making trade from his brother-in-law, David Aldona Hopkins. That was a skill he carried with him.
At the start of the "Spanish War," he enlisted as a saddler and was promoted to Corporal in Company D of the 1st South Dakota Infantry. He served in the Philippines and subsequently in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. He then returned to the Philippines and began a company associated with harness making, leather goods, rope and mining. He died in 1939.

Looks to have quite a bit of age so could be early 19th Century or even late 18th Century. Very good condition. |

There has been a recent drop in the UK market for game counters, as a result of Indian manufactured fakes appearing, and so we were able to buy this counter from a collector for a very keen price. It is now for sale at a price significantly less than it sold for 6 years ago and represents a great buy at the bottom of the market. It is guaranteed to be of 19th Century manufacture. Very good condition and complete with the original leather strap. |
